i was just wondering if anybody could shed some light on what it exactly means when i go to a show and it says: "...unable to locate on server..."etc.

It just seems to me that there is an overabundance and perpetuation of this message on the GDarchive.
And in the case of certain shows, i.e.-redrocks7-8-78, it has said this for over a month.

I thought maybe there was more to this message or something, that is not stated literally.
Such as, perhaps these shows are slated for future official release and withdrawl from the archive.

Thank You to all the people that maitain this site, and in NO WAY am i complaining.
Just a little confused and curious.

thanks again,
slim.

The Grateful Dead 7/8/78 item
http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=12005
has already been reported
http://www.archive.org/iathreads/post-view.php?id=43933

If you are asking for help with an "overabundance" of specific items, please include links more of the items' details pages where you have observed the problem. If it's a more general or widespread problem rather than just a few here and there, that could help diagnose a pattern for troubleshooting. Thanks!

Part of the confusion arises since one might think that when error messages of this sort appear on the web pages that you as a user of the archive see when you go to a specific download page, that the underlying html or whatever code would also issue some sort of error report back to mission control. But this does not happen. At present the only way these things get addressed is when someone like you logs an error report (click on the "Report Errors" link on the detail page for the specific source). After you log an error report the time to get it actually resolved depends on people's time, and what the problem is.

We will try to reupload sources that somehow got "lost". This is usually addressed when a complete year is audited to find out which seeds have problems like the one you report or what new seeds are needed on the archive.

The best way of helping is to always use the "Report Error" facility to note these issues.

thank you very much for the responses.

1.as far as the "over abundance" , most recently i have encountered the entire month of july 90, i.e.- http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=11822
, i am getting this message, approx. 20 entries all with the same message.
but also i seemed to have noticed this message more frequently in other more random spots as of late.

2.So, i should report all errors, and i should just state that i am receiving that message of "unable to locate on server..."??

thank you,
slim.

here's what i do. i use my mouse to select the message that appears on the web page and then paste that into the text entry part of the web form when you click on the report errors link.

that should be enough and yes you should report for every source that you find an issue. when you use the report error, it goes to a web page where the people that maintain the collections monitor and try to fix the issues.

posting in the forums or in the user review sections for the sources are NOT monitored by people that can fix these problems. postss there are effectively lost while the report error facility in effect creates a queue where the report remains until it is fixed.
